Where’s my music?
One of the key things missing from the iPod/Apple Remote app on the iPhone/iPod Touch is the ability to play my desktop iTunes musey on my phone. Apple’s Remote App allows me to use Airtunes to select Wifi connected speakers throughout the home, but not to output this music through the headphone jack/dock on the iPhone/iPod Touch.
There are apps out there, like Simplify, which allow me to access most of my library remotely, but they require additional desktop software and resource overhead and won’t play all of the content in my library. It’s all overkill because having access to your whole library while you’re on the road is more of a novelty than anything. What I’m talking about is home listening.
Launch Remote > Choose Speakers > Select Headphones. This makes all the difference in the world when deciding between a 16GB or 32GB+ mobile device. Which shouldn’t be Apple’s concern, because our media libraries are going to get bigger than these limitations fast as devices like the iPad and digital content become more and more available. And this doesn’t eat into Apple TV or Airport Express sales because those are for stationary speakers. So, where’s my mobile in home music, Apple?
