Apple’s iPad. For the consumer, not the creator.
10 minutes into watching yesterday’s Keynote I was sold. The idea of having so much control over browsing the Web in a laid back environment seems so completely liberating. No more dragging a carpal tunnel inducing mouse around. No more sperm killing laptop boiling your groin. No more reaching under your desk for the power cord because you can’t take your laptop anywhere for more than an hour without losing power. Liberating.
As a consumer of content, the likely mediocre keyboard along with the lack of camera and other content producing tools seems inconsequential. This isn’t about making stuff, it’s about enjoying it.
I look at it this way, never will these be the same:
- lounging in the family room with the TV on
- playing finger air hockey with a friend
- relaxing in front of the fireplace
- reading in bed
- trying a new recipe in the kitchen
- chilling on the patio with the sun and a good book
And best of all, none of these joys require 3G, which can remain the domain of your on the road device, the iPhone. Yep, I’m sold. Sign me up!
(Boy, it sure is hard not to make a reference to feminine hygiene products when you’re talking about the iPad, but it makes sense why it’s not called Canvas (my personal favourite) given the consumptive nature of the device.)
